Artist Jessie McCall
Jessie McCall is a U.S born photographer who is mostly self taught. She utilises digital photography and a Fuji XT2 camera to create her stunning artwork.
McCall began creating art after her mother’s death, at just 15 years old. She became intrigued by the concept of freezing time and capturing moments. McCall admitted that there was an additional therapeutic benefit to her love of photography, as the quietness and privacy of the darkroom offered her solace to work through her grief.
When asked to describe the origins of her current work, McCall said, “I was a late bloomer. Late to learn how to swim and still a bit of a dunce when it comes to charging through waves and staying afloat. That’s why I love this work. It challenges me and it challenges my subjects and the result is always worth it. This artwork is multifaceted - it salutes the feminine, it honors our landscapes and it inspires a childlike wonder.”
McCall elaborated further on her current work by saying, “I love what shows beneath the surface of the water. The imaginary becomes real, almost like a painting - so dreamlike in nature. It's a beautiful feeling to be able to witness a surreal moment in waking life. I enjoy working with all people, but especially women. I want to recognize our empowerment, I want to help someone who’s narrative is “I’m really bad in front of the camera” to become “wow I had no idea I could look this way” and from that stripped down, raw image, find a self acceptance that can take so much work to locate in this modern day society riddled with comparison.”
