Interview With Artist Nassim Akhlaghi Garmjani
Congratulations to Nassim Akhlaghi Garmjani for earning her place as a Winner in the Boynes Monthly Art Award September 2024 Edition!
Who are you?
I am Nassim Akhlaghi Garmjani, born in Mazandaran province and currently living in Tehran, Iran. My artistic journey began with a focus on classical realism under the guidance of master artist Amir Jamshidi. I dedicated several years to studying both classical and contemporary artworks, reconstructing master pieces to familiarize myself with their techniques and brush strokes. Since 2020, I have worked as an assistant in the student training section at Amir Jamshidi’s art academy. My passion for art is rooted in my family’s deep appreciation for the arts and my childhood experiences in nature, which fostered a profound connection with its delicate elements. Engaging with the environment allowed me to perceive the world with greater precision and thoughtfulness.
What inspired you to utilize painting as a medium?
From a young age, I have been captivated by details, colors, and forms, meticulously analyzing my surroundings. As an introverted person, painting became a way to express my emotions, narratives, and experiences without words, inviting others to engage with my imagination.
How would you describe your ARTwork?
The technical structure of my artworks is grounded in traditional methods. I am fascinated by nostalgic atmospheres and the expression of deep emotions, which are reflected in my choice of colors, subjects, and compositions.
Can you discuss the inspiration and thought process behind your winning work?
Themes of femininity and the expression of deep inner feelings are significant to me. As a female artist in a society where women’s voices often go unheard, I strive to make a lasting impact through my brush strokes. In my self-portrait titled “Nassim,” I used only black and white to represent the concepts of light and darkness, illustrating that life is enriched by the interplay between the two. My gaze reflects hope toward a future illuminated by guiding light.
Can you walk us through the technical steps of creating your winning work?
After a photography session, I selected a single photograph that resonated with the emotion I aimed to convey. I chose grey as my primary color and began the drawing process, using charcoal pencils for the dark areas and white pastel pencil to create highlights.
What do you hope to communicate to an audience with your work?
I want to convey that positive and constructive change starts with us. Every small step we take toward our goals can lead to significant impacts, and we all have the power to leave meaningful marks in the world.
Can you talk about your biggest learning experience during the process of creating your work?
From a technical perspective, I learned that having a comprehensive view of the execution and finishing from the outset allows for a more strategic approach, resulting in fewer mistakes.
Can you discuss your biggest success since starting your artistic journey?
My greatest achievement has been connecting with individuals from diverse nationalities, cultures, and perspectives through my paintings. The feedback I receive from my audience is invaluable, and I always welcome their insights.
Can you give us the best piece of advice you have ever heard/received?
Although my approach to art is traditional, I resonate deeply with Picasso’s quote: “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” To achieve the status of an artist, one must possess a comprehensive understanding of various fields, such as mythology and psychology. This diverse knowledge ultimately enables the artist to create innovative works within an open-minded framework based on established principles.
As a winner, do you have any advice for artists who want to apply for awards, competitions, residencies, etc.?
Participating in events, competitions, and artistic challenges offers a valuable opportunity for artists to exchange ideas globally. These experiences can significantly shape perspectives and inspire new concepts.
What projects are you working on currently? Can you discuss them?
I am currently creating a collection centered around “hands”. Each painting tells a unique story through the hands of different characters.
What is your dream project or piece that you hope to accomplish?
My dream in my artistic journey is to contribute positively, even in a small way, to the advancement of contemporary art. I aspire to bring to life the ideas I have in my mind, one by one.
Lastly, I like to ask everyone what advice they would give to their fellow artists, what is your advice?
Big goals can feel like trying to reach the top rung of a long ladder. If climbing all the way seems daunting, make the steps smaller and more accessible by reducing the distance between them. Never doubt the path you are passionate about, and keep moving forward. Small, consistent steps have always proven effective and are a sure way to reach our goals.
