Artist Danielle Jordaan

Danielle Jordaan is a 24 year old South African artist currently studying for a certificate in Graphic Design. She explores the familiarity of the domestic interior space and its objects through the process of painting, engraving and embroidering. She dwells on themes that speak to her about familiarity, sense of place/space/belonging and stigmas that are often associated with domestic “inside” life.

“Domestic Life Reinterpreted”//Oil on Wood Panel//2020

Her work can be said to live between the worlds of contemporary realism and conceptual work. In her style and approach, she aims to find a sweet spot between work being visually representative, thoughtful and meaningful.

Jordaan works predominantly with oil and acrylic paints, while experimenting with mediums like glass engraving, embroidery and painting with coffee.

Jordaan finds inspiration from everyday objects, travels, the domestic space as well as the spaces and places that surround her. She also enjoys painting and working from life and finds the changing effects of light intriguing.

“Love Thy Neighbour”(Series)//Oil on Canvas//2018

With her latest body of work she explains: “I find intrigue in the duality that lies between the inside and outside spaces we inhabit. I took inspiration from scenes abandoned by human presence, depicting places I've travelled to, and contrasted with everyday bedroom scenes. The distinction between what is sacred and the everyday is broken down.”

The polarity within her work lies in the interpretation that home can either be a place of refuge or a prison. The wall that surrounds a dwelling divides, hides and shields the outside world from looking in. She invites the viewer to gaze upon the paintings of dwelling places and at the same time she points out that the place of protection can easily become the place one can be most at risk.
