Artist Ivan Milenkovic
Ivan Milenkovic is a Serbian artist with a Fine Arts degree from the Art University in Belgrade, Serbia. Milenkovic has had thirteen solo exhibitions and participated in more than eighty group exhibitions.
Milenkovic uses solely oil paint and canvas, and will generally use many different brands depending on the colour, medium, or brush being used. He typically paints with a very classical art technique therefore, does not have a lot of room to experiment within his medium.
By using the classical technique of chiaroscuro (contrast of light and dark) Ivan aims to dramatize the visual exposition and emphasize the strength of the relationship between man and machine – this in turn points to a
religious, almost magical connection we have with our devices. The artist, as the knot which ties everything
together, reminds us how we feel and this solitude is deep, almost cosmic. At the end of the day, it is a harsh truth that solitude is an unexpected consequence of hyper-communication.
Milenkovic’s inspiration began as a child having the urge to draw everything around him. This sentiment has not changed, only evolved and grown. He explains this by saying, “…my environment and everyday situations. These paintings represent people portraits absorbed into their devices – laptops, tablets and mobile phones – where the only light source is the light of a PC, Smartphone screen or other kind of display tech. The Contemporary subject, theme with a classic painting technique made my paintings in a way very contemporary and socially engaged. My inspiration comes from Baroque paintings and chiaro scuro way of painting and also from everyday life and my environment.”
When inspiration has dissipated, Milenkovic believes the best way to over come it is to try to mentally move past it by both writing down ideas as well as reading them.
Lastly, when asked to give advice to his fellow artists, Milenkovic said this, “Everyday working in studio is most important, continuity in works and exhibition participation. Also talking with older and experience Artist who are successful in their Art career.”
