MeFio : A Contemporary Abstract Artist

Congratulations to MeFio for earning her place as a Winner in the Monthly Art Award June 2024 Edition!

Who are you?

I am MeFio, a contemporary abstract artist specializing in geometric Goniochromatic Abstractionism. My journey in the arts began with a deep-rooted fascination for craftsmanship. When I was younger, I was really into pencil drawings. Then I discovered a love for modeling, which led me to pursue a BA in Modelmaking at the Arts University Bournemouth in the UK, completed in 2008. My passion for art has always driven me to explore various materials and techniques, resulting in a unique fusion of geometry and iridescent colors in my work. Exploring materials and discovering what you can do with them is incredibly satisfying, providing the perfect outlet for my creative ideas.

What inspired you to utilize mixed media as a medium?

The inspiration behind using mixed media is all about pushing boundaries! I wanted to explore new dimensions of artistic expression, and mixed media offered the perfect playground for that. Using glass, resins, and computer-generated artwork allows me to create pieces that are rich in texture and visually immersive. The dynamic interplay of light and form in these materials enhances the emotional and visual impact of my work, making it an exciting journey for both me and the observers.

How would you describe your ARTwork?

I like to think of my artwork as a vibrant symphony of geometry and optical effects. Intricate geometric patterns burst to life with iridescent colors that shimmer and shift with changes in light, inviting observers to view them from multiple perspectives. I revel in the play of refractions, reflections, and caustics, whether in wall pieces or optical sculptures. The evolving touch of changing colors in different environments breathes life into each piece. My passion lies in the interplay of color and vibrancy, and I'm fascinated by how these elements evoke responses from others.

Can you discuss the inspiration and thought process behind your winning work?

"Ara Macao" is such a special piece for me. It's inspired by the beauty and dynamic movement of the Scarlet Macaw. My goal was to capture the fluidity and elegance of this magnificent bird through geometric patterns and vivid colours. The piece features bright greens, blues, purples, and blacks, all coming together to create a sense of imminent flight. The delicate swirls of colour forming the feathers are designed to captivate and highlight the bird's versatility. The goniochromatic effects, which shift colours when viewed from different angles, add depth and mirror the natural iridescence of the macaw's feathers. It's a tribute to the Scarlet Macaw's energetic and captivating presence.

Can you walk us through the technical steps of creating your finalist work?

Absolutely! Creating "Ara Macao" was an intricate journey:

Conceptualization: I started by designing the artwork digitally, assembling my vision into geometric patterns and planning the overall composition.

Virtual Planning

Material Preparation: Next, I selected and prepared a variety of materials, including metallic films, resins, and glass, ensuring they were ready to bring my vision to life.

Base Construction

Layering Process: I carefully layered the materials to achieve the desired goniochromatic effects, making the artwork come alive with shifting colors.

Metallic Film Overlay: This was where the shimmer happened! I applied metallic films using a blend of gilding, decals, foiling, and glazes. Each layer added further depth, vibrancy, and texture.

Layering of Films

Finishing Touches: Finally, I polished the piece and prepared it for display and photography, ensuring it looked as I had envisioned. A few touch-ups and refinements completed the process.

Finishing Touches

"Ara Macao" took six weeks to complete, with each step blending creativity, precision, and a bit of alchemy, culminating in the vibrant, dynamic artwork that is this.

What do you hope to communicate to an audience with your work?

Through my work, I aim to ignite a sense of wonder and introspection. I want observers to be intrigued and feel a rush of emotions as they delve into the play of light, colour, and geometry. My goal is to create pieces that dazzle the eye and touch the soul, inviting observers on a journey of exploration and reflection. I hope my art sparks curiosity and evokes emotional responses, encouraging people to see beyond the surface and connect with the patterns, textures and surfaces.

Can you discuss your biggest success since starting your artistic journey?

My biggest success has been being selected as a finalist in the International Artist Grand Prize Competition of 2023 Art Revolution Taipei and representing my homeland Slovakia. This recognition affirmed the unique value of my artistic approach and provided a platform to showcase my work to an international audience. It was the culmination of years of dedication and innovation, reinforcing my belief in the power of geometric abstraction to communicate ideas. Presenting my work on such a platform and knowing that it resonates globally is very exciting and motivation to continue exploring and pushing creative boundaries.

Can you share with us the best piece of advice you have received so far?

The best piece of advice I've ever received is to "embrace failure as a stepping stone to success." This wisdom has profoundly shaped my journey as an artist. It has taught me to see setbacks not as defeats, but as valuable lessons that fuel my growth and creativity. Each challenge and stumble has become an opportunity to learn, adapt, and refine my craft. This mindset has instilled in me a resilience that drives me forward, continually improving and pushing the boundaries of my artistic practice.

What projects are you working on currently?

Currently, I am immersed in a fascinating installation project that explores the intersection of geometry and organic forms. This piece involves ten unique structures resembling mineral structures - each crafted to reflect a spectrum of light across its metallic silver and gold surface. These two metals are the core element of each of my work. Im exploring 3D printing combined with goniochromatic elements. The goal is to visually communicate the composition of light and its interaction with these forms, offering a multidimensional and evolving art experience.

What is your dream project or piece you hope to accomplish?

My dream project is to create a public art installation that integrates optics, geometry, and interactive technology. This dynamic space would evolve in response to environmental changes and observer interactions, offering a constantly shifting visual and emotional experience. It's all about creating an engaging, immersive encounter with art that evolves with its surroundings and the people who interact with it.

As a winner, do you have any advice for artists who want to submit to awards, competitions, residencies, etc.?

My advice for artists considering submissions is to stay true to your unique vision and voice. Research the competition or residency to ensure your work aligns with their values and themes. Prepare a strong portfolio and artist statement that clearly communicates your artistic intentions. Most importantly, don't be discouraged by rejection; use it as motivation to refine your craft and continue pursuing opportunities.

Lastly, I like to ask everyone what advice they would give to their fellow artists, what is your advice?

To my fellow artists, I would say: Enjoy creating. Always be open to experimentation and never stop learning. Mixed media offers endless possibilities; embrace the challenges and let your creativity guide you. Stay true to your artistic vision and be persistent in pursuing your goals. Art is a journey of discovery, both of the world and of oneself, so enjoy every step along the way.
