Artist Patricia Alonzo Diaz

Congratulations to Patricia Alonzo Diaz for earning her place as a Finalist in the Boynes Artist Award 9th Edition [Emerging Artist category]!

Who are you?

I was born in I am Juan, a small town in the Dominican Republic where I currently reside since I was very young. I have been an art lover. I really liked drawing, designing and creating small sculptures. I grew up watching the designs and clothing that my grandmother made for the carnival in my hometown, inspired by the sea. Then she began to design the ones to create the ones by myself. Later, I had the joy of applying in the art academy, they have gone where little by little and lessons after lessons. I was developing my knowledge in hyperrealistic. It has been the opportunity of my life, where I started drawing lines until I got to the level where I am together with the discipline and dedication that is acquired in the process of the program, highlighting every detail and subtleties found in the works of art made.

What inspired you to utilize drawing as a medium?

Since I was very little, the first thing I used to get involved in the world of art was a pencil, so with this I always kept drawing in my daily life,Then when I started my art studies and the first stage in school was drawing. So always preserving how light and shadow played when working on the exercises, charcoal and pastel and this led me to feel very attracted to drawing and to achieve hyper-realistic results And strive more and more in every detail.

How would you describe your ARTwork?

I consider that hyper-realistic works of art with intense gazes are an amazing sample of the artist where he is capable of expressing deep emotions through detail, which is why in most cases I usually represent them with human or animal figures capturing minute details with an intense and penetrating facial expression which creates a sense of realism and emotional connection with the viewer.

Can you discuss the inspiration and thought process behind your winning work?

This work was very personal as its title Explains "time is not a limit" challenged myself to be able to carry out this work in record time for me, i believe that wanting is power and I did it less than the required time. I quite enjoyed the experience of being able to experiment with new techniques to obtain a good result as in other works, but with less time. I consider that it is a message that applies to daily life. Sometimes we are limited by time and we must think big and remember that we are not there are limits And if we maintain a positive and focused attitude.

Can you walk us through the technical steps of creating your winning work?

Firstly, he made a sketch of how he wanted the work to be; secondly, I took the photograph. Then I took my reference and I worked on the work in small pieces to be more precise. After finishing it, I made a final observation and added the Roman numerals in the background and reviewed some details. The technique used was charcoal and pastel on plain paper.

Can you talk about your biggest learning experience during the process of creating your work?

My greatest experience in this process, as I added earlier, is learning not to limit ourselves, that despite how fast we go through life, we must know how to appreciate each moment and that time is not a limit when you set out to achieve a goal.

I can say that my greatest success has been being able to share my artistic knowledge with children who love art and see their dedication and enthusiasm for learning. It has been one of the most gratifying experiences in my life. For some time now I have been doing small art workshops for children because they are the future, and seeing how they develop fills me with pride.
