Who are you?

I’m Seonyoung Lee, a weaver and fiber artist based in Chicago. Originally from Seoul, South Korea, I transitioned from a career as a display designer in the fashion industry to focus on my artistic practice. Working in various locations such as Shanghai, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Seoul, I found solace in fiber crafts during challenging times. This healing process inspired me to pursue art full-time, sharing my theme of "overcoming" and "healing" with others.

What inspired you to utilize sculpture/installation as a medium?

Traditionally, weaving is done on a loom, but I wanted to explore beyond conventional methods. I began experimenting by drilling nails directly into walls, creating my own weaving looms in various spaces. This approach allows me to adapt my work to different environments, resulting in unique creations every time.

How would you describe your ARTwork?

My artwork embodies my "overcoming process." I use soft, fluffy materials that appear cozy and comforting. Despite their inviting appearance, these pieces stem from my personal discomfort with my skin type, each creation symbolizing scars from various injuries. Through this work, I transform personal pain into a narrative of resilience and healing.

Can you discuss the inspiration and thought process behind your finalist work?

My work is deeply connected to my personal experiences. For instance, when handling threads and yarns, I realized the importance of treating them gently and patiently. This mirrors my healing process for injuries—taking time, being patient, and handling with care. This narrative of gentle perseverance is reflected in my artistic creations.

Can you walk us through the technical steps of creating your finalist work?

First, I assess the size and complexity of the space. If it’s straightforward, I draw guidelines on the wall for the warp thread. For more complicated spaces, like the corner space in my finalist work, I create a small mockup. I then drill nails to establish the warp thread. Afterward, I gather yarns to create a color palette, sketch my weaving design, and begin the weaving process, meticulously selecting and weaving the yarns.

What do you hope to communicate to an audience with your work?

My artistic theme revolves around "overcoming" and "healing." While my projects stem from my personal skin discomfort, I aim to extend these themes to resonate with others, reflecting their struggles and journeys toward healing.

Can you discuss your biggest learning experience during the process of creating your work?

During my graduate exhibition, I faced significant challenges in creating and installing a three-dimensional weaving space. Despite the struggles, I succeeded and received an award from my school, which marked a significant achievement in my artistic journey.

Can you discuss your biggest success since starting your artistic journey?

My biggest success was my graduate exhibition last year, featuring the piece you chose as a finalist. It was my first attempt at creating a three-dimensional weaving space. Despite the challenges, the piece was well-received, and I was awarded by my school, marking a milestone in my career.

Can you give us the best piece of advice you have ever received?

One of my advisors suggested frequently updating our artist statements. As emerging artists, we should continuously evolve, not necessarily changing our core themes but growing and exploring new dimensions of our work.

What projects are you working on currently?

I'm currently planning a new project involving spinning yarn. Spinning is an exciting process that transforms fragile wool into strong yarn. This concept of strengthening mirrors my weaving process. I aim to explore and create a project that reflects this "strengthening process."

What is your dream project or piece you hope to accomplish?

I aspire to gather diverse narratives from various people, weaving their stories into a collective piece. While my work is currently based on my own experiences, I envision a project where small weaving pieces from different individuals come together to form a larger, cohesive artwork.

As a finalist, do you have any advice for artists who want to submit to awards, competitions, residencies, etc.?

Ensure your theme, color, and vibe are distinct and true to yourself. Art is a means of self-expression. Confidence and a strong voice are crucial.

Lastly, I like to ask everyone what advice they would give to their fellow artists, what is your advice?

Never stop practicing and honing your skills. Continuous practice not only enhances your abilities but also overcomes obstacles in your creative process. Diverse skill development is essential for artistic growth.
