Artist Melanie Martinez
Melanie Martinez is a 23 year old American artist who holds a BFA with an emphasis in painting and is currently preparing for an MFA. Martinez’s work recognises that as human beings we desire a connection. Her work is inspired by the intimacy and private aspects of close human contact.
Martinez believes that intimacy produces a sense of security, comfort, familiarity and can surface in the most mundane instances of daily life. To her, meaningful relationships are the most nurturing ingredients to happiness.
Martinez’s work speaks to the reality of negotiation, space-sharing, and affection in romantic love, without apology or concern for what might be deemed unflattering. Finished compositions within her work portray moments of conversation, touch, and shared space; the depiction of our home and private moments, we are opening up viewers to our raw and intimate selves.
Martinez utilizes soft materials such as charcoal, soft pastel, paint, ink, Prisma colors, and embroidery. She has also been experimenting with watercolour, ink, and graphite in order to create small illustrations, which intend to capture a quick and warm moment within her and her partner’s home. She hopes to communicate tenderness to viewers while also promoting honesty and mutual support between people.
Embroidery is a time-consuming process similar to building and nurturing required for a healthy relationship. The application process of Martinez’s works creates a softness and delicateness for the viewer. She not only utilises her environment and personal relationship for her work but also instils meaning in the mediums and tools that she uses.
